What is a cooktop and how is it different from a stovetop or a range? A cooktop is basically a standalone appliance with gas, electric or induction burners. It is not attached to an oven, which is typical of a stovetop. The combination of a stovetop and an oven in one appliance is called a range. (That’s why some people call the stovetop a rangetop.) Cooktops are often installed when homeowners use an island design for their cooking area. They are preferred when a separate oven is installed elsewhere in the kitchen.
Do You Like to Cook?
Cooktops are often a sign of a person that likes to cook! And that means they don’t want to get stuck with reheating food in a microwave because their cooktop broke down. Gas cooktops are very durable and well known, but electric or induction cooktops are also readily available. Although these appliances eliminate the need to run gas lines to isolated locations (and therefore are often found in kitchen remodel projects), non-gas cooktops also have a greater reliance on electronics and digital components. Therefore, just one faulty chip or button can lead to the cooktop not working properly. And when that happens — bring out the Hot Pockets!
