How is Your Dishwasher Performing?
Dishwashers are a staple in most modern kitchens, valued for convenience, water efficiency, and their ability to clean and sanitize dishes in a way that handwashing can’t. So, when your dishwasher starts to show signs of age or is not doing the same job it once did, it is concerning. This article focuses on three of the most frequent problems dishwashers have and simple ways to repair them.
Common Dishwasher Problems
Dishes Are Not Clean After Cycle
Dishwashers have two jobs: clean and sanitize. If dishes are visibly dirty after the wash, rinse, and dry cycle that is a problem! One reason for this is overcrowding when loading the dishwasher. Ensure you leave enough space between dishes to allow the water to circulate freely. If this doesn’t fix the problem, then the culprit is probably food debris in the spray arms or filter components which block the water flow. Inspect the arms and filter for blockages and clean them thoroughly.
The Dishwasher is Leaking
Finding water on the outside of the dishwasher or on the floor after cycles is concerning. Leaking usually occurs when the door gasket or door seal wears out or the float switch malfunctions. First, inspect and replace the door gasket if it shows signs of damage. Now on to the float switch. The float switch is responsible for determining the amount of water in the dishwasher and shutting it off when there is enough. A broken float or a switch caught up with debris does not work properly. Check the float switch for debris and proper movement up and down, replacing it if necessary.
Strange Noises Coming from the Dishwasher
Modern dishwashers make minimal noises while they perform their regular cycles. If you detect loud or unusual noises, don’t ignore them. There are a variety of reasons for unusual noises such as worn-out bearings, a defective motor, or loose components. Give your dishwasher a thorough inspection, tightening any loose screws you find. If the noises persist, then you need to consider replacing the motor or bearings.
Routine dishwasher maintenance helps avoid many of the common problems explained above. Regular cleaning of your dishwasher’s filters and spray arms, in addition to checking for clogs regularly, also extends the life of your dishwasher.
