The History of Laundering Clothing – Part 2
Part 2 – The Clothes Dryer
Last week, we discussed the invention of the washing machine. Now, let’s delve into the incredible clothes dryer!
The Invention of the Clothes Dryer
In the early days, drying washed clothing was a slow task. After wringing out a good amount of moisture, wet clothing was laid on bushes or rooftops to dry in the sun. Years later, clothes were hung on lines outside and moved inside when the weather was not agreeable.
In the 19th century came the invention of clothes dryers called ‘ventilators’. Large metal drums with ventilation holes were placed over an open fire and rotated with a hand crank. While clothes dried faster, they often smelled of smoke, picked up soot, and at times caught fire. To resolve these problems, heat from a stove rather than an open fire became common.
The first electric clothes dryer was invented in the early 20th century. It was a large metal drum that rotated while heated air circulated in it. Electric and gas-powered motors and heaters were used in these early models. Eventually, improvements were made by adding an exhaust for the moist air and a timer.
Today’s dryers are just as sophisticated as the washing machines we use. In addition to timers, dryers have clothes settings, temperature controls, cool-down cycles, and smart sensors that determine when clothes are completely dry, which then shuts off the machine. No matter your room space, clothing capacity needs, or budget, there is a clothes dryer for everyone!
Modern Laundering
While a necessary household task, the laundering of clothes has been simplified over time. Modern machines have reduced the time spent washing and drying clothes, allowing for better use of our time. The efficiency of today’s machines is ever-increasing with added eco-friendly and smart technology integrations.
Because our laundering machines are such a necessity, used daily in some homes, it is important to repair them as soon as we know there is a problem.
